This Is Us, NBC’s hit drama about the Pearson family, is now in its fifth season and still going strong. As gripping as this season has been, we’ve also had to wait a little while between episodes. A Million Little Things focuses not on a single family, but on a group of friends living in Boston. The drama, which first premiered in 2018, chronicles the struggles, highs and lows as they navigate life, but when one of their friends dies, the group is brought even closer together and begins to live life the way they’ve always wanted.
Parenthood
Parenthood, which aired six seasons before coming to an end in 2015, showed life through the eyes of the Braverman siblings, Adam (Peter Krause), Sarah (Lauren Graham), Crosby (Dax Shepard), and Julia (Erika Christensen). Now grown up and experiencing adulthood together, the four of them find comfort in each other as they deal with the challenges of life in their California town.
One Day at a Time
The 2017 reimagining of One Day at a Time brings back the classic Norman Lear sitcom for a new audience. Lighter than This Is Us but not at all afraid to tackle weighty topics, One Day at a Time follows newly-single Penelope (Justina Machado) and her family, which includes her two tween kids (Isabella Gomez and Marcel Ruiz) and her mom, Lydia (Rita Moreno). While One Day at a Time came to an end last year, there are three full seasons of the show now streaming on Netflix.
The Fosters
Jennifer Lopez’ family drama The Fosters centers around Stef Foster (Teri Polo), her partner, Lena (Sherri Saum), and their unconventional family. Together, Stef and Lena raise their son Brandon (David Lambert), plus adopted twins, Jesus and Mariana. They also end up adopting their two foster children. Along with their blended family, Stef and Lena co-parent with Mike (Danny Nucci), Stef’s ex-husband — and yes, things are bound to get a little complicated.
Friday Night Lights
Before This Is Us became a phenomenon on NBC, there was Friday Night Lights, the popular sports drama about a small Texas town and its beloved football team, the Dillon Panthers. The heartfelt series follows Coach Taylor (Kyle Chandler) and his family — his wife, Tami (Connie Britton), and their daughter, Julie (Aimee Teegarden) as he struggles to balance his personal life with his goal to lead his team to victory.
Modern Family
If This Is Us is getting a little too teary for your taste, turn to Modern Family for a lighthearted break in between episodes. The award-winning comedy is a documentary-style look at the Dunphy family and their relatives, who all make up a big, unconventional family. Through life changes, adoptions, marriages and more, the Dunphys show it all in their sweet, funny style. Modern Family ran for over a decade on ABC, so there’s plenty to catch up on if you never watched the hit sitcom.
Firefly Lane
Netflix’s Firefly Lane swaps the family drama premise for a soapy series about two friends. Based on the Kirstin Hannah book of the same name, Firefly Lane follows Tully (Katherine Heigl) and Kate (Sarah Chalke) through the decades, from their tween years to their 40s. The drama shows the inseparable duo as they go through the best and worst times of their lives, but through it all, they always have each other by their side.
