On Tuesday night, the season finale of This is us Season 5 entitled The Adirondacks aired on NBC and it left us all shocked, considering the numerous plot twist that followed in the episode. The season finale was so full of feelings that I find myself forced to divide the episode between the actual storyline and the thrilling flashforward. In this article I’m going to focus on the present storyline, that is Kevin and Madison‘s wedding preparations with a little feature from the past.
Rebecca Pearson faces up the demons from the past by talking about Randall’s biological mother
Randall (Sterling K Brown) has recently travelled to New Orleans to know more about his biological mother’s story and Rebecca (Mandy Moore) was looking forward to hearing more about it. She made it well clear to Beth during Madison’s bachelorette party and now she decided to face Randall and ask him for more details. Her reaction was staggering. She was crying while her son was explaining her what he felt.
The emotional involvement in this scene of The Adirondacks is as strong as the guilt that grips Rebecca for what she hasn’t said in all these years. Randall is uncomfortable to talk about it with her but then he raises her telling her that the woman who is no longer there is not his mother but the woman who gave birth to him. Randall’s mother is Rebecca, who raised him, and nothing will ever change that.
Beth Pearson is the living proof that anything is possible if you put your heart into things
Let’s move on from the family matriarch to another great mom: Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson), who’s looking for every way possible to make her relationship with her daughter Tess (Eris Baker) work out. Tess has recently come out as queer and she’s in a relationship with Alex, who are non-binary. At first Beth had trouble getting along with all this but she’s doing her best to make her daughter feel good. She herself has noticed and we are witnessing a real emotional moment between mother and daughter. Tess tells Beth that she loves her even though she doesn’t prove it.
Toby chose work and put the family in the background. He will definitely pay the consequences
In The Adirondacks Toby (Chris Sullivan) reveals to his wife Kate (Chrissy Metz) that he secretly applied for a job in San Francisco and he was hired. There’s a bit of a catch, though, because ever since the pandemic situation is over, the company requires him to be in San Francisco three times a week. This puts Kate in a bit of a crisis because Toby tells her that she can leave work now but the wife is finally happy and satisfied with her career.
Kate tries to quit, but her boss Philipp won’t let her tell her that she’s really good at what she does even though she didn’t want her at first. Kate then reconsiders and talks about it with Toby, by proposing to try having a long-distance relationship for the sake of both and everything will be fine. But will it really be so? We have already seen their relationship crack and the distance will only make things worse.
Are Kevin and Madison meant to be together just like Jack and Rebecca?
Here we are, the real protagonists of the episode The Adirondacks and the big day: Kevin (Justin Hartley) and Madison (Caitlin Thompson). However, this wedding isn’t to be done. To decide it is the latter who does not agree to marry a man who does not love her. During the episode, we saw several flashbacks of Madison with her family that made us understand better her background.
[My mother] She left me with a father who gave me nothing, who literally told me not to expect life to have magical sparks. I stumbled into a life gratefully accepting any shred of affection from anyone. Your family gave me the first family I ever had. It would be so easy for me to tiptoe in and accept the fact that you might not be in love with me but I can’t get married to someone who isn’t in love with me… you know.Madison not accepting to marry Kevin
While we see Kevin and Madison’s wedding preparations, flashbacks are inserted now and then…
there are Rebecca and Jack when the children are still young. The two begin not to get along on small matters and their children convince them to recreate a small wedding ceremony to confirm their vows. What if this parallelism means that Kevin and Madison are meant to be together like Jack and Rebecca? Even though their marriage is over right now?
Did you enjoy the first part of the episode The Adirondacks or were there too much plot twists? I’d say they were the suitable springboard for the shocking flashforward I’m going to tell you about tomorrow.
