Burgess and Ruzek ’s relationship on Chicago PD will be explored for the rest of the ninth season, showrunner Gwen Sigan reveals.
In this week’s Chicago P.D. episode, Ruzek used to prove he wasn’t a cop. But the dose was extremely potent, and he overdosed. In those last moments, he thought about his family and how he didn’t want to end things like that. Him and Burgess decided to do what’s best for their adoptive daughter Makayla.
However, it seems fans don’t have to lose faith. Although Ruzek might have to move to that horrible apartment for good, it might be the perfect way for him and Burgess to eventually get back together.
“They’ve both grown. Burgess was waiting for a long time for Ruzek to stop being a hothead. He is still that person, but it’s not as crazy,” Squerciati said.

The show will continue to play with that for the rest of the season
“We will continue to play with that for the rest of the season,” showrunner Sigan said. “You’ll see them deal with that new dynamic and navigate that new space and see if it is better for Makayla or isn’t, and how they react to it as well. We’ll definitely explore it some more.”
Marina Squerciati adds, “I like that the inclusion of a child makes you navigate your relationship differently. I think if Makayla wasn’t there, they’d take the time to work through it and build back. But that process is unavailable to them in front of a child, so it’s kind of sad. They want to be together and take that time to build, but they don’t have that space, which is also pretty selfless — and lovely.”
