Why Heather Chose Girl in the Cellar
Heather says she was drawn to the script’s “nail-biting” energy and the chance to play a character who—despite appearing brash—carries hope and lightness. After years often cast as “tough” characters, she was excited to take on a detective role that allowed for warmth alongside grit.
Preparing the Role: Craft & Boundaries
Detective inspirations
To find the detective’s voice Heather watched classic and modern detective performances—pulling technique and tone from films and limited series to create a believable investigator without tipping into cliché.
Emotional boundaries
Importantly, Heather avoided deep dives into real-life captivity cases. She explained that for some roles, over-researching real trauma can cloud the performance; she preferred to preserve the character’s hope and compassion.
The Toughest Scenes: Logistics & Emotion
Two moments stood out: a late-night, long single-take where Heather delivers extended dialogue while moving through a scene, and a highly emotional cellar sequence with co-actor Kelsey. Both required physical stamina, trust between actors, and a calm, safety-first production culture.
On-Set Culture: Safety & Joy
Heather praised producer Amelia Burstyn and director Rob for creating a supportive set atmosphere. She highlighted Kyla Pratt’s warmth and ability to uplift the cast—details that made exploring difficult material possible and safe.
“Kyla would walk on set and crack a joke—she created a space where we could go to those dark places and come back to light.” — Heather Doerksen
Career Highlights & Personal Notes
Heather reflected on a turning point—working on Pacific Rim—that confirmed acting was her life’s path. She also shared affection for voice work (LEGO Ninjago), and named comedy, horror and sci-fi among her favorite genres.
