Chrissy Metz signed a contract with a slimming clause to play Kate Pearson!
She is now famous for giving her face and body to Kate Pearson, one of the protagonists of This is us. But six years ago Chrissy Metz was just an actress struggling to make ends meet and ating 1€ supermarket noodles. It’s not a mystery that as soon as she was chosen for the role, which made her famous, she was very happy but Metz had to sign a clause in the contract that would have forced her to lose weight.
The thing was not a problem for her, in fact, an extra reason and a challenge to accept because there is no goal set. Chrissy has to lose some weight, but the contract doesn’t specify nor how many pounds she should lose, nor when. It’s a long-term plan where every year the actress and the producers confront each other and figure out at what point of the ‘journey’ Chrissy – and Kate, with her – have arrived.
Metz felt close to her character since the auditions
Chrissy immediately found herself close to Kate Pearson’s storyline because the woman actually felt real emotions. She had the same problems and weaknesses as the character for whom she was feeling so much empathy and for whom she auditioned to play. Kate was really struggling with her weight and her emotions and she wasn’t just a woman worried about getting a pound.
“I will always be afraid of a chair breaking under me.” or “Will people be able to recognize if they are really pregnant?” And going to Dan [Fogelman, the creator of This is us], in tears, I said, “These are my fears.”

A stormy past for Chrissy Metz, always struggling with the balance
The actress who plays Kate Pearson said she had a difficult past because of her weight. The woman has always had a conflictual relationship with food: for her it has always been a means to bond with people and to create memories. She remembers, for example, the grilled cheese she ate with her grandmother that could create good memories and a good relationship with her.
Chrissy Metz was bullied for her weight even by people who were supposed to protect her. She said, in fact, that her stepfather had disgust of her body and could not help but stare at it especially when she was eating. He pushed, slapped and punched her during her teenage years, weighing her at regular intervals to make fun of her results or joking about having to put a lock on the refrigerator. The mistreatment has undoubtedly caused Metz a deep sense of shame and pain.
The woman admitted, however, that the man apologized and she forgave him.
Her great fear and losing almost 50 kg. How did Metz managed?
During her 30th birthday celebration, Chrissy Metz had a panic attack.
“I thought I was going to die,” she said, and that’s when something changed. In 5 months she’s lost almost 50 kg just with a healthier lifestyle, without therefore any titanic business diet. All it took was 2000 kcal and 20 minutes of walk a day to have satisfactory results.
To date she’s done what is necessary not to lose the results she obtained but rather to improve them, also working on her mental health.
