Although a vocal subsection of the Outlander fandom have always wished in a real-life romance between Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe, actually, Caitriona Balfe is a married woman. After a long relationship with musician Dave Milone when she first started her modelling career in the early 2000s, now she’s married to music producer Tony McGill. Here’s everything we know about Caitriona Balfe and Tony McGill ‘s love story!

January 2015: A friend captures Caitriona Balfe sitting on Tony McGill’s lap at a party.
Around the same time Caitriona Balfe was becoming a household name thanks to Outlander premiering on Starz in August 2014, Balfe was striking up something special with music producer Tony McGill.
The earliest photographic evidence of the pair together is this Instagram video posted to fellow Irish actor Donal Brophy’s account; it shows the Irish actress playing the flute while sitting on McGill’s lap at a bar on New Year’s Day.
February 2017: Caitriona Balfe and Tony McGill are spotted at the Oscar Wilde Awards.
Honored at the 2017 Oscar Wilde Awards, Balfe joined Star Trek actor Zachary Quinto, Irish folk rock singer Glen Hansard of The Swell duo, Loving actress Ruth Negga, and comedy actor Martin Short for a night of U.S.-Irish celebration hosted by J.J. Abrams.
“J.J. gave me my first job in the U.S., so it’s quite a nice full circle event to be a part of,” Balfe said to Variety at the time of the honor. McGill, of course, tagged along for the evening with his beauty.

January 2018: Caitriona Balfe confirms they are engaged, showing off her ring at the Golden Globes.
After two years of dating, the actress confirmed to People at the 75th Golden Globe Awards that she and McGill got engaged over the holidays. And she also gave onlookers a close-up peek at her sparkly new hardware. “It happened over the break. I’m very happy,” she said. That night, the actress was nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Drama for her work on Outlander.
July 2019: Tony McGill, Caitriona Balfe, and Sam Heughan get cozy at a music festival.
Perhaps to tease fans (but probably just because they are adults and all just really good friends), McGill, Balfe, and Heughan pose for a picture at the Henley Festival in Oxfordshire, England. The Henley Festival “embraces a vibrant programme from pop to world music, classical to jazz where art and gastronomy share equal billing with music” and is seemingly stomping grounds for McGill, as music is kinda his thing.
August 2019: Caitriona Balfe and Tony McGill marry in a secret ceremony in England.
People reported that family gathered for a Saturday wedding at St. Mary’s Church in Bruton, Somerset, in the United Kingdom. Rev. Louis Beasley-Suffolk officiated and performed a Roman Catholic service. Balfe’s on-screen love interest Sam Heughan took to Instagram to mark the day with a post, writing, “Remarkable weekend. ☂️??? Wonderful tailoring @alfreddunhill.”
Balfe confirmed the nuptials on Twitter in November 2019. When a fan asked why she’d never shared any wedding photos, Balfe replied, “Cause that was for me, my husband and my family. Sorry…. but thank you for the love.”
February 2020: The two make a red carpet appearance at the 2020 Academy Awards.
Back before we realized the world would change one month later, Caitriona Balfe brought her husband to the 92nd Academy Awards on February 9, 2020. Balfe portrayed Mollie Miles, wife to Christian Bale’s Ken Miles, in 2019’s Ford v. Ferrari.
The movie was up for four Oscars, won 2, and Balfe got to wear this stunning Maison Valentino gown.
August 2021: Caitriona Balfe announces the birth of their baby boy.
In mid 2021, blind items on gossip site Deuxmoi not-so-subtly hinted that Balfe was expecting, and suggested it was the reason for Outlander‘s significantly shortened Season 6 (it will be 8 episodes long, not 12 as originally planned). While Starz cited “the challenges of filming in these unprecedented times” as their reason, there’s officially no denying that Balfe was secretly pregnant, which might have been a factor.
“I’ve been off socials for a while as I was taking some time to enjoy cooking up this little human …. We are so grateful for this little soul ….that he chose us as his parents,” Balfe wrote in the caption of an August 18 Instagram post that shows baby Balfe-McGill’s teeny hand. “I’m in awe of him already and can’t help stare and wonder at all the possibilities of who he will become, where he will go and what he’ll do on the big adventure of his life.”
Balfe did not reveal her baby boy’s name, instead reflecting on how lucky he is to be born with the resources he needs.
Balfe’s announcement received lots of love from her Outlander castmates, including Lauren Lyle (Marsali), César Domboy (Fergus), Duncan Lacroix (Murtagh), and Sophie Skelton, who plays her daughter Bree onscreen. “Hero,” wrote Lyle, adding a sweet heart emoji.
