The holiday season is almost here, and with it comes the excitement of new festive films to warm our hearts. One of this year’s highly anticipated releases is The Merry Gentlemen, a Netflix original directed by Peter Sullivan and starring the talented Britt Robertson, Chad Michael Murray and Beth Broderick. This fresh take on Christmas movies blends heartfelt storytelling with dazzling dance performances, offering a unique holiday experience.
We had the pleasure of sitting down with director Peter Sullivan and actress Beth Broderick to discuss the making of The Merry Gentlemen. From the inspiration behind the movie to the camaraderie on set, they shared insights that will make you even more excited to watch this delightful holiday tale. Watch full interview below.
The Vision Behind The Merry Gentlemen
When asked about the inspiration for the movie, Peter Sullivan revealed:
“I’ve always loved stories that celebrate creativity and the magic of putting on a show. With The Merry Gentlemen, I wanted to create something fresh and fun that stands out in the crowded world of Christmas movies. It’s about a Broadway dancer, played by Britt Robertson, who returns to her small hometown to help save her family’s live music venue. Her solution? A male dance revue that becomes the talk of the town.”
Beth Broderick, who plays a pivotal role as the protagonist’s witty and supportive mother, added:
“It’s beautifully written. The whole thing is really well written. And I love my character. I thought she was really, you know, understanding and mom-like, but also game and willing to try new things and willing to look at things differently. So I just thought she was delightful and I wanted to play her. It’s also a wonderful company to work for. So, you know, it was a win-win.”
Creating Magic on Set
Both Sullivan and Broderick agreed that the camaraderie among the cast and crew played a significant role in bringing the film to life.
“We had weeks of dance rehearsals before filming,” Sullivan explained. “That gave us the time to build a real sense of community. By the time we started shooting, everyone was in sync—literally and figuratively.”
Broderick chimed in:
“They worked really hard and it was just fun to participate in. It was great to watch.”
A Holiday Movie Like No Other
When asked what makes The Merry Gentlemen stand out, Sullivan shared:
“It’s a film that combines humor, heart, and a fresh perspective. It’s not every day you see a Christmas movie with a male dance revue! But at its core, it’s about finding joy, creativity, and love during the holiday season. It’s something audiences haven’t seen before, and I’m excited for them to experience it.”
Broderick added her hopes for viewers:
“That to take a risk, to take a chance that you never know what’s going to work or where you’re going to find yourself, but to be willing to just be open to fate and to giving new things a try. “
Conclusion
With its unique premise, engaging performances, and festive charm, The Merry Gentlemen promises to be a standout addition to this year’s holiday lineup. Peter Sullivan, Beth Broderick and all cast and crew have poured their hearts into creating a film that’s equal parts heartwarming and entertaining.
Don’t miss The Merry Gentlemen on Netflix, starting this Wednesday. It’s the perfect way to kick off the holiday season with a smile, a laugh, and maybe even a dance or two.
