EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Brendan Taylor Breaks Down His Journey as Mutt on Firefly Lane! – WATCH

Share:

Firefly Lane is always a well of emotions, but also of laughter, which refers back to one and only one character: Mutt. We at Survived The Shows had the pleasure of chatting with Brendan Taylor about his experience on Firefly Lane and what fans can expect from Mutt’s journey on the show. Check out the full interview in the video below!

What’s been the main element in Mutt’s character and the show in general that fascinates you the most and made you say yes to Firefly Lane?

BRENDAN TAYLOR: I love playing comedic characters and comedies. So in the first season it was just something that kind of reached out to me and and spoke to me, the character. It was really fun. I had fun with the audition. I didn’t know how it was going to go as it sort of goes and all of a sudden I got a callback and then sort of got it. But the best thing about going from season 1 to season 2 is that we had a bunch of time during COVID, since Season 2 was delayed. Coming back we had a lot of new crew and everything, but I was sort of one of the consistent things.

I took a bit more license to just improv and have fun with the character. That’s what I like most. It kind of makes sense for him to chime in with hilarious, crazy things because he’s just Mutt and that’s what he gets to do and he gets away with a lot. It’s just been really fun to discover, episode to episode, what I’d be doing. I was obviously fun to find out in the first season that he always had a thing for Kate, and then they date briefly and then in season 2 plenty of plenty of fun things came up.

In your opinion, what makes Firefly Lane unique and sets it apart from other TV shows?

I’m not an expert, but I can’t think of many shows that focus on platonic love. Every show is always about romance, but how many shows really focus on like true friendship and love? It is something that is so valued that for some reason it is less of a common thing than classic friendships. You know, Wayne’s World, like Wayne and Garth for example. They’re best friends, but there’s not shows that really deal with how friends are so important to each other. In this case female friends too.

Women go through different things, especially through the decades, seeing how them as friends have dealt with relationships and personal things. But also being a woman in the 70s and the 80s and the 2000s and how that changed or didn’t change through the years and them having themselves to each other to rely on. So I think that’s a really big part of the show and the book, of course.

For all the fans that haven’t watched Firefly Lane Season 2 yet, how would you describe it if you had just like 3 words or a sentence?

Lots of love, or lots of laughter.

It’s really centered around that and it always comes back to love. For us making it, it was just such a blast to spend so much time together and share all kinds of fun jokes in between some of the heavy stuff. As much as I didn’t experience a lot of the heavier stuff, except towards the end, but Mutt had his own moments. So I definitely had my own sort of moments and some things didn’t actually end up keeping in the the show.

If you had the chance to play another character on Firefly Lane, which one would you choose and why?

Johnny would just be a fun character to play but I’m not Australian enough. I think Danny would be a fun one, Ignacio Serricchio‘s character. Danny is super fun, the male Tully, equivalent of being that sort of charismatic, bullheaded and all the other things that they match up on.

What was your favorite scene to film on Firefly Lane, and why?

They’re a lot. I really love shooting scenes whenever we’re our kind of Scooby gang, I call it like of of me, Johnny, Tully and Kate. Those are always fun because we’re just always sort of riffing. A good one was the wedding scene where we come up with the song, that was particularly fun in season 2, for those who have seen it. We all got to record it ahead of time and then sort of played back to it. I got to throw my own twist on it. If you listen closely, I’m sort of harmonizing in the background. So that was particularly fun just because it was you just kind of having to let loose and and be willing to look silly, but I mean it’s it’s hard to choose a moment for sure.
