EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW – Director Kaila York Previews A ‘Wild Adventure’ on Lifetime’s Road Trip Hostage

Veronica Ramirez and Luke Charles Stafford star in “Road Trip Hostage” a new, original movie premiering Saturday, April 29 (8 p.m. ET/PT), on Lifetime. We at Survived The Shows had the pleasure of chatting with director Kaila York about her experience in the making of the movie and what fans can expect. Check out the full interview below!

What’s the main element in the movies’ characters and the movie in general that fascinates you the most and drew you to join “Road Trip Hostage”?

What drew me to the project was Emma’s determination to survive the ordeal. From the start,
Emma knows what she wants but she doubts herself. When faced with a decision to pursue her
dream career, she does so against her mother’s wishes. At her core, Emma is a woman with
strong motivations. I love those types of characters because they are true to life.

What’s been the biggest challenge for you in directing this movie?

This movie provided me the opportunity to learn new things. I had never filmed on an LED
stage before. Because the movie had so many driving scenes, it made sense to film two days on
a stage. All of that was new: from selecting the LED driving plates (the footage played on the
screens around the car) to planning out what shots would be needed on practical locations to
connect those scenes in the edit.

How would you describe “Road Trip Hostage”?

At the core, “Road Trip Hostage” is a story about a mother’s determination to find her daughter
and a daughter’s will to survive.

What can you tease about Emma’s journey throughout the movie?

She’ll surprise you.

If you could choose a character from “Road Trip Hostage” that you would have loved to play, which one would it be and why?

Probably the mother. She trusted her gut immediately, knew something was wrong, and acted
on it. And I aspire to that.

Did you take anything from set, any prop or piece of costume, to remember your experience?

You know, I don’t do that anymore. I’d have a closet full of trinkets if I did. I take lots of pictures
along the way and that’s what I hold on to to remember these productions.

Road Trip Hostage, starring Veronica Ramirez, premieres April 29 on Lifetime.
