“Sometimes you have to break a rule to fall in love”. That’s how director Maxwell McGuire exclusive teases Lifetime’s Record Breaking Christmas.
We at Survived The Shows had the pleasure of chatting with Maxwell McGuire about his experience in the making of Record Breaking Christmas and what fans can expect from the movie. Check out full interview below!

What’s the main element in Leah and Devan’s characters and the movie in general that fascinates you the most and drew you to join Record Breaking Christmas ?
MAXWELL MCGUIRE: I always like it when two people are too caught up in their own goals to realize that what they really need is the person right in front of them. In a love story you want two characters starting their journey as far apart as they can be realistically even if they’re geographically right in front of each other. Humour and a good story are how we watch them fall for one another.
As we know quite well so far, Lifetime movies and shows always feature well-shaped and relatable characters. Is there any particular character you can relate to the most on a personal level?
MM: I relate to different parts of many characters. I would like to think I’m focused like Leah the adjudicator; I try to be as compassionate as Devan; as well as blunt like Nell. I wish I was as wide eyed and bushy tailed as Jin, but that ship may have already sailed by…
To all the fans looking forward to watching the movie, how would you describe Record Breaking Christmas in just 3 words?
MM: It’s a movie about realizing that rules can guide us, but can’t determine our happiness. Sometimes you have to break a rule to fall in love.
On the directing point of view, what’s been the biggest challenge for you?
MM: This movie, like other Christmas movies shot in the middle of a blistering summer, has the usual challenges. First our actors suffer in the heat as we try to keep sweat off their brows. Second, making it feel like winter is tough when everything around you is green! We bring in fake snow, cover up flower beds and do our best with angles to maintain the persistence of vision that keeps viewers focussed on what we want them to be paying attention to – namely the story and our characters!
Talking about the environment on set, how would you describe your experience while filming Record Breaking Christmas and do you have any fun anecdotes to share?
MM: We had a ton of laughs, Michelle has almost as much energy as me so it was fun to bounce around and enjoy the process. Andrew’s humour is a bit more sly, as he slips jokes in behind his giant smile. We were lucky, we got to shoot the bed and breakfast at Gina’s ( my aunt in law to be’s) house. She herself is obsessed with Christmas and loved the idea of a christmas movie being filmed in her dream house! So that was cool.
If you could choose a character from Record Breaking Christmas that you would have loved to play if you were an actor, which one would it be and why?
MM: I think Jin’s character get to have lot of fun, being the comedic relief, physical comedy and the representative of the audience as he experiences the movie like they do – up front and in on the action.
