Kathryn Davis and Ish Morris will star in “ All Aboard for Love” a new, original movie premiering Saturday, April 22, at 8 pm ET on Super Channel’s Heart & Home. We at Survived The Shows had the pleasure of chatting with Kathryn Davis about her experience in the making of the movie and what fans can expect. Check out the full interview in the video below!
Can you tell us a little bit about your character and how she fits into the story of “All Aboard for Love”?
So as you said, I play Alison Marlowe. She’s former owner of a very large Marina, and the movie starts about a few weeks before she’s supposed to be transitioning out of that life. She’s just about to start an adventure working on private yachts as a yachtie, they kind of say, a crew member and she’s handing over the reins of her family business to the new investment company. That’s kind of taking it over. So yeah, that’s where the movie starts.
What initially drew you to the role and made you want to be a part of this movie?
Yeah, so this is actually been a project that BrainPower had in mind for quite a while. So they were actually doing what’s called BCAM footage in the year of 2020. So it was a two year project of them sort of getting everything lined up, lockdowns etcetera. That kind of really restricted them. And I was actually just starting production. I was in my costume fittings for Santa’s Got Style, another movie I did with them and someone let it slip that they had me in mind for this character. And so I was like. And so I found out on my way back from my costume facing back home, my agent called me and she said they have another offer for you.
So it was the movie was offered to me. It was very opposite and I was very excited to. It’s very opposite of what Santa’s got Style was like. I was very chic. I had straight hair. I was a department store manager walking around in stilettos and very tight fit clothing and very kind of upright. And this one was very earthy, very grounded, all filmed outside.
And in Santa’s got style I had no exterior shots in the entire film, and this one is mostly filmed outside. So that was a really nice change out. That’s something that’s very attractive to me. And yeah, I got to have my hair wild. I got to be and to work close to the water. We filmed up in the Georgian Bay on Lake Huron, and it was useful. I find myself very drawn to water. So that was really, it was a really fun element of the the movie.
How did you prepare for your character and get into their mindset for the role?
I didn’t have that much time in between. So I was straight away like on my script learning it as best as I could. I was doing some research as well because I don’t have a lot of experience with boats itself, so I was learning a lot of lingo, looking through the scripts, kind of trying to figure out, they talk about certain knots and ties and ropes and types of sails … So I was like, OK, I’m going to learn ports and starboards. I just did some research beforehand to be as best prepared as I could and I thankfully got to wear low shoes, no high heels in this one, so I had good see.
Can you describe your character’s journey throughout the movie and how they transform over the course of the story?
The beginning of the movie we find Allison in the the last few weeks of her tenure at a Marina that her family has owned for the last 10-12 years, and she’s handing over the reins. Her parents have already set sail, they’re down in the Caribbean and she’s just about to start her new adventure. Instead of being manager of an entire Marina, she’s going to be a lower crew member of a massive super yacht and she’s just about to kind of set sail from. They’re going from Florida over to Europe for the start of the summer to meet the family over there.
And she crosses paths with Joel, played by Ish Morris, and their instant connection makes her sort of start to second question, her choice.
She’s very determined to go. She wants to have her own adventures, she wants to take the next stage of her life. But at the same time, she’s having her heart pulled the other way by this deep connection with Joel and this might be a bit cryptic, but I don’t want to give too much away. One of the really nice points of this script that makes it very different is that you’ll see in the end that Allison, she doesn’t give up anything that she wants.
She is able to pursue her dreams but still come back to what she loves at the end. So that’s something which is very empowering for women. Particularly in the genre, you don’t want to lose yourself in life, lose your personality, your dreams, your aspirations just because something else opens up in life, you know? It was more so about a partnership of being like I don’t want to give it away, but go and do your adventure and I’ll be here. Perfect. I’m not giving too many spoilers away. That’s one thing I did really like about the script is that she can go and have her freedom and come back to where home is, where the heart is, I think is what the theme is of this this movie entirely.

What message do you hope viewers take away from “All Aboard for Love” after watching it? Are there any particular themes or messages in the movie that resonate with you personally?
I think the main message that audiences will find is that I mentioned earlier “Home is where the heart is” and that you can go out on adventure but come back to what you love and the constancy of love. I think that those are some strong messages in it for female empowerment. I really liked the direction of the script when Alison did not give up on her dreams entirely and that she’s got the full support of the numerous people in her life, but including, without giving it away, the new love and trust she’s off to adventure.
What was your favorite costume or wardrobe piece from the movie, and why?
I had for the costume department, same team as Santa’s goy Style and Christmas on 5th Ave. They really are so good at what they do. And they had a lot of really a beautiful kind of color wheel for me. There was a lot of navies, a lot of oranges, burnt oranges, those kinds of colors. My favorite outfit, you’ll see in the movie, I wear like this onesie, like a jumpsuit and it goes down to about the ankle and arms and it had like jungle theme on it.
It was with palm trees, leaves, tucans and parrots and when I see it, I was like: oh. That’s colorful. But it was so fun and it fit perfectly into the world that the imagery I’ve seen. That was my favorite costume. I really loved any of the shots that I got to do in that one. That’s a fave.
The movie features some stunning scenery and locations. Can you talk about any particular locations you filmed in and what it was like to shoot there?
There were three locations we used all together for all the exterior shots, two of which were on the Georgian Bay. It’s about an hour and a half drive from Toronto and beautiful scenery like gorgeous Ontario fields, forests and so forth on the way up. And it was just very peaceful that we had two marinas that played the world of Marlo Marina and then we were also filming in a tiny little town called Sharon Ontario for some of the other shots. It was beautiful, like I got to see. [We had] early morning shoots so I was there for beautiful sunrises. I was there for gorgeous sunsets. It was just very surreal to sort of sit there and camera crews all around.
In one of the scenes in particular, Ish Morris and I, my costar, were filming on the beach in the early morning and it was like steam mist on the top of the lake. I’m just sitting there on a blanket and it was pretty cold. I’ll admit it was cold at that time in the morning and there’s a little dinghy boat and I think, aesthetically, it’s going to look really, really beautiful. And I just sort of sat there. I was like, wow, how lucky am I to be doing what I love doing what I trained to do. I’m just sort of living in my element right now. It’s very simple.
What do you think sets “All Aboard for Love” apart from other romantic comedies? And why should they tune in to watch it?
I think what sets this movie apart, it’s always a list of ingredients with a film and we had a wonderful cast come together and one thing that was very special was how many of the cast were mixed race as well. So I think that’s something that’s very, very special and something that is not seen as predominantly in film on TV. So that was really refreshing to work with different people. Like Ish Morris that wass born in Ottawa, he was raised in the Cayman Islands. He’s sort of been all over the place. I’m born in the UK, raised within between the UK and Canada, and it was really special to be able to share that with the cast members.
I think the story is going to be very special.
That’s something that sets it apart, the fact that it’s Allison’s journey, it’s also Joel’s journey of rediscovering himself. So as she’s trying to sort of launch out and go like this is what she has always wanted to do, Joel is really trying to have a reassessment on his life and they just by happenstance meet. And that said the adventure moving forward and then I think it’s going to be a visual, feast for people to watch. I think that’s something that’s going to set it apart and I’m very excited for that.
