Read on to discover Kaylah Zander’s journey into the world of intense storytelling and suspense! Check out the full interview below!

Can you tell us a bit about your character in Don’t Scream, It’s me?

– Liz is a woman who’s really strong in many ways, but who let the men in her life dictate her direction, until now.

What initially attracted you to your role in Don’t Scream, It’s me?

– I loved exploring this character who sort of over-fixated on the romantic relationships in her life and then through this very harrowing experience, re-discovers what her own values are, how she wants to live and what her dreams are.

– I was also excited to do my own stunts again! It’s been years since I did The 100 and I was really excited to practice more stunt work. These action scenes were so engaging and Kathy, our stunt coordinator, taught me a lot!

What do you think makes this movie so special and captivating?

– I think this film is special in that it asks us to think about what freedom is; true freedom, not just financial freedom (although that is impactful, of course) and also what it means to go along with violence. Who’s allowed to be violent and what means to an end can we accept?

What do you hope audiences take away from watching Don’t Scream, It’s me?

– I hope there are women out there who watch this film and remember what their dreams are, before they got crushed by a really challenging, exploitative world and before they agreed to follow what was practical rather than what made them feel alive.

What was it like working with the rest of the cast on set?

– Everyone was amazing! We had some crazy weather roll in for our outdoor scenes, but our director, Wendy, rolled with all the punches. I loved working with Nathaneal, he was such an emotional support when the schedule was stressful or the material felt heavy.

What can you tease about your character’s journey?

– I would just say Liz’s values and desires are being tested in a life-changing way for the second time in her life and we’ll see if she makes different choices this time around…

What was your favorite scene or moment while filming Don’t Scream, It’s me?

– I really enjoyed all my scenes with Roark! The tension in those cat and mouse scenes, where we’re both playing chess moves was just so fun as an actor.

Can you tell us about your characters and your favourite memories from “The Recruit” and “Fire Country”?

– My character on Fire Country never really got the chance to develop! She was a divorcee chef from San Francisco who moved to a small town looking to start again and we never really got to see how she navigated that world, but I did love getting to step into my queerness with Aidan, which was a first for me.

– Amelia Salazar is very dear to my heart. She is so fun, so grounded, so direct; a woman who really knows what she wants. But she goes on a tough journey and is forced to re-examine her morals in Season 2 of the Recruit (which is coming out in early 2025). I’m really excited to see how her trials comes together with the rest of the action and Owen’s quest for redemption! I haven’t seen a single frame yet, so we will all be watching that together when it comes out.

Change of subject, What have been some of the most memorable projects you have worked on throughout your career, and why?

– I love working with my friends. Even now I love a low-budget passion project where everyone is there to learn, grow and tell a story they feel really strongly about. I have a lot of great memories from working with Kasey Lum on two music videos. I loved being part of the team of Smoke Eater and working with the cinefile duo Gloria Mercer and Aiden West. I know those creatives will make it big and I feel so honoured that I got to work with them at the very start. I will also be forever grateful to The Recruit; I just learned so much on that show and the production team, the crew and everyone on the cast treated me with so much warmth and respect.

At Survived the Shows, we are big fans of Christmas rom-coms. What is your all-time favorite?

– Ooo, I’m going to have to say Love Actually? Maybe The Family Stone? Bridget Jones feels very Christmas-y to me also.

Can you tease something about your next projects?

– Well, I might have already said too much about The Recruit Season 2! But aside from that, I also have a short memoir project of my own in the works, that’s been a big journey for me as an artist. I’m also attached to a really beautiful indie feature that’s still in its early stages, about two sisters who rediscover their connection while working through a teenage trauma which kept them apart for a decade.

“Don’t Scream, It’s Me” starring Kaylah Zander will premiere on Sunday, October 27th on Lifetime Channel.
