Can you tell us a little bit about your character in Will Trent?
I play Pete Chin on the show. If people aren’t familiar with the show, it is a police procedural show. So for people that are familiar with procedural type shows like CSI, like Law and Order, where there’s a new case almost every week, sometimes a case may span more than one week, but they solve a new crime every week. And a lot of times with police procedurals, they’re solving murder cases. And so whenever there is in the show, whenever they find a dead body, they need the dead body to be examined by the medical examiner.
I play Pete Chin, who is the medical examiner that works at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. So the show takes place in Atlanta, Georgia. And the characters, all of the main characters, work for either the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, which is like the FBI, but it’s just for the state of Georgia, or the Atlanta Police Department. And my character, Pete, works in the same building and actually does the medical examination work for both the DBI and the Atlanta Police Department.
So I get a chance to, you know, as an actor, I have a lot of fun. Get a chance to go and play on the show whenever there’s a dead body. You know, my character shows up to kind of bring peach expertise into that world. And it’s been exciting. It’s been a really fun show to work on.
What initially attracted you to this role?
So the funny thing is, you know, for actors, when we audition for projects, sometimes we have no idea that’s gonna be right. And for Will Trent, it was a brand new show. So there are times when you audition for something and you know what it’s gonna be because it’s a show that’s been ongoing. So if somebody were to a popular show right now is Stranger Things. Right. Stranger Things has been going on for, I think, six or seven seasons. And if somebody got an audition for that show, they’re like, oh, okay, I understand.
You know, I understand what the show is, and I understand who the characters are and what the role and what the world is because that show has been going on for a while. Whereas when I auditioned for Will Trent, there was nothing at that point, it was a new show, was going to be season one. But the thing that we do know sometimes is a lot of times the, the shows and movies are based on source material that is sometimes a book. And in this case for Will Trent, it was based on a book series, written by the author Karen Slaughter. So I did have that as background.
So I researched her. I researched a little bit about the book. If you search for the medical examiner in her book series he isn’t really a big character. So there wasn’t anything to go on. So on the one hand it’s more difficult because you have less information, but on the other hand it’s a little bit easier because you have more freedom as an actor. You have more freedom to do what you want to do. So that, you know, it attracted me to the role to be, to do what I wanted with the character because there weren’t too many constraints on it.
And also it was attractive to, and I think if I’m remembering correctly, when I auditioned for the role, I already, some of the actors were attached to the show. Like they already cast the lead actors by that point. Right. And so researching that and getting a chance to see who some of those actors who I may get a chance to work with if I got the part, that was also something that was really attractive about, you know, getting a chance to play Pete Chin.
