Brec Bassinger, Donna Mills and many more star in the new V.C. Andrews’ Dawn limited series which is set to premiere on Lifetime on July 8 at 8p/7c. We at Survived The Shows had the pleasure of chatting with star Megan Best about her experience in the making of VC Andrews’ Dawn Season 1 and what fans can expect from the movie.
Can you tell us a little bit about your character and how she fits into the story of “V.C. Andrews’ Dawn“?
Megan Best: Christie is in the 4th movie and I believe she’s in the third movie as well as a younger version. But the older version which I portray is in the 4th movie. She starts off a little more closed off and sheltered in the world that is around her. Due to a series of unfortunate events she’s forced to grow up very quickly and as a consequence, take care of her younger brother. I think that, in a way, her transformation is almost mirrored in the way that Dawn transforms in the previous three movies. That’s something that Jackie and I spoke about quite a bit, but – I don’t want to give too much away – I think that would probably be the biggest arc for her.
What initially drew you to the role and made you want to be a part of this limited series?
Megan Best: One of the things that I really was drawn to about Christie was the the very maternal relationship she has with her younger brother. I have an older brother, but I’ve always wanted a younger sibling and I got really close with Sawyer who plays Jefferson and we had this very sibling like relationship on set, which was so much fun to come to work to every day. It was just very interesting how protective I became over him and and to work with an actor so much younger than me, which I’d never done before, but I really enjoyed it. It was very playful and freeing and I loved it so much.

What’s been the biggest challenge you experienced in portraying Christy?
Megan Best: Definitely the emotional levity of the entire story. I don’t think I’ve ever done a job where every single day it was heavy because of her story and the circumstances that are surrounding her. We had so much fun on set but it was also like very like. What’s the word? It was emotional and and I had to kind of put myself in her shoes in in circumstances that I don’t think anybody would want to be in. And my heart goes out to people that have been in those circumstances. But it like just imagining these horrible things happening to me every day was was probably the biggest challenge and just sustaining that throughout the period.
How would you describe “V.C. Andrews’ Dawn” to all the fans that are looking forward to it, and why should they tune in to watch it?
Megan Best: Probably very thrilling, suspenseful, I’d say. Tear-jerking. There’s some very heart-wrenching moments in the series that I think will get to people. But definitely it’s a ride.
What message do you hope viewers take away from “V.C. Andrews’ Dawn” after watching it?
Megan Best: This is really good question. I would say ‘stay true to your roots’ maybe. Family is like the biggest center of this whole series and not even just like where you’re born into but like the family that you create for yourself outside of blood. There are several characters that aren’t blood-related in this series, but they become so important in Dawn’s character development.
For example, Jimmy is Christy’s stepfather but that’s her dad and he becomes so important in who she becomes and how she grows. And I think the same is for Dawn. And there’s so many other characters like Charlotte who cares for Christy and Bronson. All of them just take her in when her own family kind of turns on her. So yeah, just I guess I said stay true to your roots, but you’re like your roots in the sense of like what characteristics you look for people that that help elevate you and and are going to push you forward. I would say I hope that made sense. I have.
