Can you tell us a bit about your character in Murder in a Small Town?
Edwina Yen is witty, determined, and wise beyond her years. She works incredibly hard and puts everything into building her career. She struggles to prioritize time for life outside of work and can definitely be perceived as a perfectionist. She is focused, sympathetic, and
genuinely cares about the people around her, specifically those she meets throughout the show.
What initially attracted you to your role in Murder in a Small Town?
I was originally intimidated by the role of Edwina. She’s a bit older than I am and she’s dedicated to a career that I have no previous experience in. I think that’s what drove me towards playing her. It pushed me to explore my physicality and range. She is a mystery
and I loved the idea of telling the story of someone who holds her cards so close to her chest. I’m still discovering new things about her and that’s what I find so exciting about this role.
What do you think makes this show so special and captivating?
Murder in a Small Town isn’t like any other crime drama show. It reels you in with its beautiful scenery, character relationships, and intense stories. The show does a great job of keeping you on the edge of your seat.
What do you hope audiences take away from watching Murder in a Small Town?
I hope the audience can see the chemistry between the cast just as much as I experienced it on set. So many close friendships were formed on this show, and I think you can recognize that as the series progresses. I also think people will appreciate the setting of the show. Getting to work on the Sunshine Coast was a blessing. We all fell in love with Gibsons and the wonderful people there.
What was it like working with the rest of the cast on set?
This cast felt like my family. I’m happy to say I made some new best friends on this set (shoutout to my big buddy, Aaron Douglas). We’d get together with the crew to watch hockey games at the local bars and do weekend karaoke. I had the honour of working closely with Rossif Sutherland, who is so kind, down to earth, and hard-working. Kristin Kreuk was also a wonderful scene partner. I feel extremely lucky to have gotten to collaborate and share the screen with her.
What can you tease about your character Journey?
Edwina comes across as professional, efficient, and fully immersed in her work. However, there’s much more to her than just her career. As the season progresses, you can see the cracks begin to show. Despite having a polished exterior, she still experiences insecurity and
self-doubt. Throughout her journey, you can see how her relationships grow and her perspective on life changes as a whole.
What was your favorite scene or moment while filming season 1 of Murder in a Small Town ?
There’s so many! One moment that stuck out to me was during my first week of filming. We were shooting Episode 1 at a home in Roberts Creek. The sun was shining and we were on lunch break. I walked down to the beach, laid in the sand, and just listened to the sound of
the waves. Then some of the crew made their way down to do the exact same thing. We all sat in silence and enjoyed the beautiful scenery. It was so peaceful and I could tell everyone was enjoying their time in Gibsons just as much as I was. Most of the crew had relocated
there for the show, so it meant alot to know that they were happy there.
Change of subject, What have been some of the most memorable projects you have worked on throughout your career, and why?
“My Life with the Walter Boys” is still one of my favourite projects to this day. I’m currently filming season 2 in Calgary. Getting to live in a new city with the rest of the cast has been an experience I will never forget. Despite there being so many of us, we’ve grown so close
and have so much love for one another. Being on set together feels like a big hang-out, and it’s hard to not get distracted and laugh all the time. I know I’ve made life-long friends here.
At Survived the Shows, we are big fans of Christmas rom-coms. What is your all-time favorite?
“Love Actually” is definitely my favourite Christmas rom-com! I watch it every year with my family.
Can you tease something about your next projects?
This new season of “My Life with the Walter Boys” has some very exciting new storylines and characters. I can’t say too much now, but I’m really excited about the direction it’s heading. I think the fans are going to love it!
