EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Screenwriter Cara J Russell Previews GAC’s A Royal Date for Christmas!

Share:

Danica McKellar and Damon Runyon star in the new Great American Family Christmas movie A Royal Date for Christmas, premiering November 25 at 8/7c as a part of the Great American Christmas line-up. We at Survived The Shows had the great chance to chat via email with screenwriter Cara J Russell who shared her experience in writing this new Great American Christmas movie and teased what people can expect. Check out the full interview below!

What initially attracted you to the incipit in “A Royal Date for Christmas”?

CARA J RUSSELL: I wanted to write a royal project but I didn’t want it to be about a prince because there is a lot more red tape to deal with logistically with the character, so I thought a Duke would be ideal. He has a royal title but he can move through the world much easier with less scrutiny and security.

What do you think makes the romance in the movie so special and captivating?

CARA J RUSSELL: Danica McKellar who plays Bella Sparks and Damon Runyan who plays the Duke of Tangford have a wonderful chemistry on screen. They took what was on the page and made it romantic and magical. We believe the fairy tale come true!

What do you hope audiences take away from watching “A Royal Date for Christmas”?

CARA J RUSSELL: I hope that they enjoy a sweet, romantic movie that is a pleasant two hour escape from any worries or problems. I also hope that it helps anyone who might be feeling discouraged about being alone remember that there is hope. The right person can walk through the door at any moment and completely change your life in the best way.

What can you tease about the characters’ journey?

CARA J RUSSELL: We have two characters who are broken hearted from their past relationships and discouraged due to how they were treated. It’s a fun journey to watch them fall in love; especially with an actress of Danica’s caliber, she’s amazing and brilliant. Damon has the presence and charm of a Duke, and we believe that he is royal.

What was your favorite scene or moment while writing “A Royal Date for Christmas”?

CARA J RUSSELL: My favorite thing to write in these movies is what we call the cute meet or meet cute, when the characters first meet. I had fun with their initial interaction; the Duke isn’t at his best and definitely not his most polite, and Bella gets back at him in a fun way.

Can you tease something about your next projects?

CARA J RUSSELL: I don’t have anything currently in pipeline so if anyone needs a writer, I’m here!
