Nikki DeLoach, Andrew Walker and Jaycie Dotin star in Curious Caterer: Foiled Plans, a new, original movie premiered April 26th at 8 p.m. ET/PT. We at Survived The Shows had the pleasure of chatting with star Jaycie Dotin, who plays Marla, about her experience in the making of the movie ‘Curious Caterer: Foiled Plans‘ and what fans can expect from the movie.

Can you tell us a bit about your character in Curious Caterer: Foiled Plans?
Marla is the care-free, quick witted best friend of our lead character, Goldy Berry. As a skilled florist and owner of “Marla’s Cafe”, she partners with Goldy’s catering company, Berry Good Catering, to host some of the most prestigious events in their hometown of Elk Park, Colorado. She also chips in to help Goldy and Detective Tom Shultz solve some of the most baffling mysteries Elk Park has ever seen all while keeping things light with her silly antics and sassy humour.
What initially attracted you to your role in Curious Caterer series?
The moment I read the audition sides I immediately fell in love with this character’s charm and her comedic ability. Because Marla and I share a lot of similarities, I knew her in a way that I haven’t with other character I’ve played in the past. I was also very excited about the prospect of being able to do multiple films as the same character which is a luxury us actors don’t often get to experience in the MOW (movie of the week) world. Something was telling me it was going to be a very special project and I was right. I feel so lucky to have been given this opportunity. The cast and crew are phenomenal and I am so honoured each time I get to step on set and work with them all.
What do you think makes this movie / series so special and captivating?
For starters, the stories themselves are really interesting and the mysteries keep our viewers on the edge of their seats. An even bigger part to it, though, is the chemistry between our actors. We all formed an instant bond during the filming of our first movie in the series: Dying For Chocolate. Over the last couple of years, we have grown our friendships on and off camera so whenever we get together to make another film, it’s like reuniting with your friends at summer camp. We genuinely have such a great time with each other and I believe our audience is able to relate to that energy, love, and pure joy that shines through the screen while watching the Curious Caterer series.
What do you hope audiences take away from watching Curious Caterer:Foiled Plans?
Don’t commit crimes. You will be caught. *wink
Also, if you are ever invited to a masquerade ball, call our costumes designer because this was the best wardrobe I’ve ever had!
What was it like working with the rest of the cast on set?
Like a dream. Honestly, if I ever had the opportunity to handpick my ultimate ensemble, I would choose all of these people. Nikki, Andrew, Reilly and Lochlyn are truly the most generous, kind, funny, and professional people to work with. They not only add so much to the films with their individual talents, but they also bring out the best in me. I have learned so much from each and every one of them and I couldn’t be more grateful to call them my colleagues and friends.
What can you tease about your character Journey in Curious Caterer: Foiled Plans?
From the end of Fatal Vows and all the way though Foiled Plans there is a “will they won’t they” energy between Marla and Detective Dave Trach (played by the brilliant Brock Morgan). All I can say is I hope we get to see the full arch of this relationship play out. I just love the chemistry between the two characters and working with Brock is always a good time. Fingers crossed we get to learn more about them in the next film.
What was your favorite scene or moment while filming Curious Caterer: Foiled Plans?
I really enjoyed the scene in the secret room when Marla is pouring over the ledgers and discovers (spoiler alert!) there is a money laundering scheme! I love the way she way she attempts to weave in Shakespearian language while explaining the discovery to Trach. I mean, she did tell Goldy in the beginning of the film that she’d been “brushing up on her Shakespeare” and she stayed committed to it through the entire film, eve if no one else was playing along. I admire her tenacity.
At Survived the Shows, we are big fans of Christmas comedies / Christmas rom-coms. What is your all-time favorite?
I hate picking one favourite because there are so many amazing films in the world but if I had to choose, the first one that comes to mind is the live action “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” with Jim Carrey. There’s no denying he is a true master in all things comedy but is equally adept with his dramatic performances. I really look up to him and learn something new about the craft every time I watch his films.
Change of subject, What have been some of the most memorable projects you have worked on throughout your career, and why?
Other than the Curious Caterer series, my favourite project would have to be the Ivy & Bean movie series on Netflix. I was fortunate enough to play Ivy’s mom in all three films. I feel like there is no way to really describe what it was like. Every single person who had a hand in that film was pure magic, the absolutle top of their field, and it showed. I met some of my best friends on that set and I still pinch myself when I think back on how much fun we had. Knowing that I was a part of bringing those stories to life was truly one of my proudest moments as an actor. Shout out to Keslee Blalock (Ivy) Madison Skye Validum (Bean) Lidya Jewett (Nancy) Marci T House(Charlotte, Bean’s Mom) and Garfield Wilson (David,Bean’s dad) and Elissa Down (director)
Can you tease something about your next projects?
I can! I just wrapped filming a Christmas movie that will be a part of the infamous Christmas Countdown on Hallmark this coming season and I am so excited for this one to go out into the world. My character is the villain of the story and oh my gosh is she hilarious. From her ridiculous uniforms to her perfectly bedazzled planners and schedule binders, she will keep you laughing the whole movie. I can’t say too much but she is a total perfectionist and will tell people when they aren’t doing things up to her standards, all while wearing a perfect smile on her face. You’ll have to tune in to see if she ever gets her redeeming moment! I had such a great time shooting this film and I can’t wait to be able to share more details as we get closer to the Christmas Season.
