Tim Matheson, who plays Vernon ‘Doc’ Mullins in the upcoming season of Virgin River, is a great actor with a long career. One of Tim Matheson ‘s latest roles was Dave Malone, Rebecca Pearson’s father, on the NBC drama series This Is Us.
We at Survived The Shows had the pleasure of chatting with Tim Matheson about his experience on This is us set. In particular his relationship with Milo Ventimiglia and Mandy Moore!
Throwing back to your past experiences in acting, you starred in another great TV show that wrapped its run a few weeks ago – This Is Us. What’s your favourite memory out of that experience and how was it like to work with Mandy Moore, Milo Ventimiglia and all the crew on the show?

I was in that show only for five episodes. I’m in just several scenes per episode, and most of my stuff was with Milo. I love Mandy and what they do on that show is exceptional. From writing to directing, the actors, they’re award-winning stuff and it was a unique show. We’d never seen a show like that before. It was groundbreaking.
My character was pretty evil in a way – he kind of had a nice facade but he was rather bigoted and unloving to his daughter and untrusting of his daughter’s choice in her husband. But who did finally come around towards the end, you know.
I remember the last episode that I did…
I don’t think it was the last one that was aired, but we did a Thanksgiving episode, which was Thanksgiving in different generations, and by that time I had gotten to be very friendly with Milo and you know, I was an older guy telling who had accepted this man in his life and telling him how to get along with your wife.
He’s got ‘let me give you some advice’ and it was very funny and very flippant and he was basically saying ‘well, here’s what you do. You get drunk, you don’t pay any attention to him because they’re crazy and you know, then you’ll have a better time. So and watch the football game’. Which is a rather chauvinistic and sort of old way of looking at things, but it was, it was fun because the writing was so good and the characters were so strong. And then, you know, to have Mandy and Elizabeth Perkins there.
It was a joy to be in scenes with them because they’re such good actors.
So it really raises your game. You know it’s it’s wonderful to perform with great material and great performers and I just adored being on this show. It was a big surprise. I mean, all of a sudden I’m cast in that and I had to study up on the show. And you know, watch a bunch of episodes and say, OK, this is what this is. He was a very deceptive character. He seemed to be very nice, sweet at the beginning and then there was a real undercurrent to him which was not very helpful to Mandy and Milo’s love.
It’s about growing and growth in your life and learning. If you’ve made a mistake to how to correct it and and if you’ve done a bad thing, you know, we are all human. We all have our own short sightedness and prejudices and shortcomings like that. So, especially with your children, it’s learning how to accept them as adults, support them, whatever their choice is. You know, and it was great for my character to finally reach that point with Mandy and Milo, you know?
