We’re only a few days away from the much anticipated premiere of Chesapeake Shores Season 6, the final season, which premieres August 14 on Hallmark. Greyston Holt, who plays Jay Ross, a teacher at Chesapeake Shores’ school and one of Abby’s suitors, Chessies should really ‘buckle up’ in view of the show’s final season!
We at Survived The Shows had the pleasure of chatting with Greyston Holt about his character’s journey on Chesapeake Shores and what’s next in Season 6. Check out full interview in the video below!
What’s the main element in Jay’s character and the show in general that fascinates you the most and drew you to join Chesapeake Shores?
GREYSTON HOLT: Well, in my career I’ve done a lot of drama and darker-type roles and sometimes it’s nice to counterbalance that with something lighter and a little more feel good. Chesapeake shores, even though it has some drama, it certainly is on the lighter side of that. So yeah, I was looking forwardto playing Jay, who was this just lovable, very kind school teacher in this kind of lighter world of Chesapeake Shores.
And it also doesn’t hurt that where I live – I live on a small island called Saltspring Island – is very close, it’s one island over from where Chesapeake Shores is shot on Vancouver Island. So it couldn’t be closer to home, which is always nice. I don’t have to travel far, I just take a take, a little ferry – 20-minute ferry and then half an hour drive and that takes me to the parks where Chesapeake Shores is shot.
Just like many other Hallmark productions, Chesapeake Shores is so loved by fans also because of its well shaped characters and relatable storylines. Is there something in Jay’s character that you see in yourself? Where are you two most similar and where are you two most different?
GH: I have a lot of similarities to Jay. On the surface, I think I kind of carry myself for the most part like he does. Just easygoing. I’m kind to people, I’m very open. But on the flip side of that, I think where I’m different than Jay [lays on the fact that] I’m also quite introverted, and I think I have a darker side to me that Jay doesn’t really have. I really think he’s just through and through a light-hearted good guy who loves teaching kids and I like those things too, but I also like the darker side of life as well. I don’t think that exists in Jay.
If you had to describe Chesapeake Shores Season 6 in 3 words, which ones would they be?
GH: Buckle up, baby. [Laughs] In separate words, how about… Live, laugh, love. No, there’s a bit more drama in this one. I mean the big cliffhanger at the end of last season, that’s everyone wants to know. I can’t let you know, but yeah, I would say ‘buckle up, baby’.
Many many Chessies are waiting to find out whether Jay is the one who Abby called in the final instants of S5. What can you tease about it and what can we expect from Jay’s journey throughout the season?
GH: I think all I’ll say is that Jay finds the answers he’s been searching for. Yes, I know that’s quite vague, but, you know, with any final season of a show, you kind of hope that there is some resolution. I think that there will be some things left unresolved, but I think where fans want to see things resolved they should end well.
How was it like for you to build the relationship between Jay and Abby with Meghan Ory on set?
GH: It was great. I mean, she’s actually from a small city close to where I grew up, so we kind of have some similarities there. She’s from Victoria. I’m from Saltspring island. They’re very close, so we kind of bonded over that. And she’s just a lovely open, warm person and she’s a fantastic actress which made my job that much easier. I really enjoyed my time with her on set. She’s a sweetheart.
If you could choose any other character on Chesapeake Shores that you would have loved to play, which one would it be and why?
GH: I think I’d played Connor because Andrew Francis, who plays Connor, is one of my best friends and we were friends long before I came on to Chesapeake. So I’d love to put his shoes on and, you know, give a shot at playing the lawyer.
