Hallmark Channel has a new series coming: The Way Home follows the lives of three generations of women in a single family with a time travel curveball thrown in. We at Survived The Shows had the pleasure of chatting with Jefferson Brown, who stars as Colton, about his experience in the making of The Way Home and what fans can expect. What’s been the main element in Colton’s character and the show in general that fascinates you the most and drew you to join The Way Home?
My interest in the project was instant. Our writers and showrunners, Alexandra Clarke and Heather Conkie – and the entire team of writers, created a fully formed character in Colton that spoke to me on so many levels. I’m honoured to have been given the chance to portray the character and hope he speaks to the audience the way he spoke to me.
For all the people that were looking forward to watching the show, how would you describe The Way Home in just 3 words?
If I had to choose just three words to describe The Way Home it would have to be; Love hurts sometimes.
What can you tease about Colton’s journey throughout the show, what can people expect from his arc?
Colton’s journey fascinated me every episode. He experiences so many challenges, as we all do, but to see it on the page and have the chance to present his heart in all manners was a gift that kept on giving.
What’s been the biggest challenge for you in portraying Colton?
The biggest challenge in playing Colton was his musicianship. I’m not a musician so that element was very both exciting and sweat-inducing.
Is there any feature in Colton’s character that you can relate to on a personal level?
The feature in Colton’s character that I can relate to most is the love of family and the struggle to do right by them. Colton’s not perfect, nor am I by any stretch, but we both try our best. He’s also better looking than me.
Talking about the environment on set, how would you describe your experience with the cast and crew? Do you have any fun anecdotes to share with us?
This first season was really quite dreamy. From the very top of the call sheets to the very bottom, the vibe on set was always one of excitement and belief that we were making something special. I’d be hard pressed to choose an individual moment in fear it may spoil it for yas. But I can say there was a lot of laughter and hugging.
If you had the chance to play another character on the show, apart from Colton, which one would you choose and why?
Everybody on the show is so good, I fear that if I was to say I’d like to play that character it would diminish someone’s performance, so I will respectfully decline asnwering that question.
Throwing back to the origins of your acting career, how did the passion for acting come about in your life?
There was always something about playing make believe that I got a kick out of. Be it running around my street as a kid with my friends pretending to be ninjas or playing G.I. Joes in the basement, looking back now it was all the same stuff that I most enjoy about the job. Working with others in a effort to build intriguing characters and worlds for them to inhabit. I didn’t “act” until my third year of university.
Among all the roles you’ve had the chance to play so far in your career, is there any particular role or project you’re mostly fond of?
This is another tricky question, but I’d say it’s a toss up between three; my first job, my last job, and the next job.
If you had to give some advice to young people who want to pursue an acting career, what kind of advice would you give them?
Any advice I could give someone wanting to pursue an acting career is to be honest with themselves. The life of an actor is a struggle most days, and nearly impossible on the other days. If you want it, go for it! Just remember, Love.Hurts.Sometimes.
I can’t express how lucky I feel to be a part of this show and my only hope is that the viewers who come along for the ride fall in love with it the way I did.
