The Crawley family is about to return to the big screen with a new chapter of Downton Abbey, entitled A New Era, only in theatres from May 20. Let’s take an exclusive first look!

Synopsis
The original principal cast of Downton Abbey will all once again return for the second film Downton Abbey A New Era. In addition to the original cast, Hugh Dancy, Laura Haddock, Nathalie Baye, Dominic West, and Jonathan Zaccaï will join the cast.
It is 1928 and the family and servants of Downton Abbey are all attending the wedding of Tom Branson and Miss Lucy Smith, daughter of Maud, Lady Bagshaw. Since her health has deteriorated, the Dowager Countess Crawley has moved back to Downton to be closer to her family. Lord Grantham announces that the family solicitor will visit Downton at the request of the Dowager Countess and that the whole family must be present.
Violet has inherited a villa in the south of France, which she wishes to bequeath to Sybbie, Lady Sybil and Branson’s daughter.
A decision that does not please Tom Branson very much. Filled with questions as to why the late Marquis de Montmirail left such a generous gift to the Dowager Countess, Lord Grantham receives an interesting phone call. Mister Barber, a director from the British Lion film company, wants to set his next silent film, The Gambler, in Downton Abbey. Robert thinks it’s a grotesque idea. But, with a major offer on the table and a quick tour of the attics and rooftop with Lady Mary, he reluctantly allows Mary to take charge and do what she thinks is best.
Downstairs, news of the film’s arrival at Downton causes great excitement.
Daisy and Anna are overwhelmed with excitement at the prospect of seeing their matinee idols in person while Mrs Hughes has to find a way to break the news to Mr Carson. Daisy and Andy are now married and living on Mr Mason’s farm on the estate. An arrangement that presents its own difficulties although Daisy hatches a plan that she hopes will lead to the newly married couple having their own space.
As the film crew and stars prepare to arrive at Downton Abbey, the family plan their escape from the impending chaos and use the opportunity to visit the villa in the south of France. Edith plans to return to work after the birth of their son Peter and the prospect of writing an article about how the south of France has become a fashionable holiday destination for the rich and famous is too tempting to turn down.
As the family prepares to leave for France, the actress and actor in the film arrive at the house. sending the servants into a frenzy of excitement.
Myrna Dalgleish is as beautiful in person as she is on the posters, but will she live up to her reputation? Her co-star, Guy Dexter, is charming and gentle and leaves the women servants swooning in the corridors.
His charm is no stranger to Thomas Barrow who, however, having been rejected so cruelly in the past, keeps his feelings firmly in check. Having been persuaded by Lady Mary to take Carson with them to France, Robert and the rest of the family embark for France to meet the Montmirails, leaving Mary in charge of the film crew. Robert and Cora are pleasantly surprised by the warm welcome they receive from the new Marquis of Montmirail but realise that it will take time for their mother to get used to the idea of losing her winter home to a little girl who belongs to this English aristocratic family.
Once in France, the family tries to unravel the mystery of this generous gift received from the Countess Mother and enjoys the beautiful landscapes of the Côte d’Azur.
Searching for the truth, however, Robert finds more than he bargained for and this generates more questions than answers. Questions that only his mother can answer. Having a secret of her own, Cora feels compelled to share it with her husband and this hastens their departure from France.
At Downton, the film is plagued by problems as the film society threatens to stop funding due to the rise in popularity of sound films. Jack sends his secondary artists home because he can no longer pay them. When the film is on the verge of collapse, Mary and Mrs Hughes come to the director’s rescue with an ingenious idea that could save the day but means all the servants have to pitch in and help. Mr Molesley discovers a surprising talent he didn’t know he had, which opens up a new career opportunity for his future.
The Crawleys return to Downton where Isobel has been given the task of looking after the papers by Violet. There she discovers some letters from the late Marquis de Montmirail to the Dowager Countess and discusses them with Violet and Robert. With the help of the entire servants Jack Barber manages to complete his film. Downton Abbey 2: A New Era is full of happy moments, fun and humour, tears of joy and sadness and new beginnings.
