Exciting news for “One Tree Hill” fans—Netflix is currently working on a sequel series that promises to reignite the magic of the original show. According to exclusive reports from Variety, this highly anticipated follow-up brings back some of the original stars, with Sophia Bush, Hilarie Burton, and Daneel Ackles stepping into the role of executive producers. Ackles will also be producing under her Chaos Machine banner, alongside her husband, Jensen Ackles.

Becky Hartman-Edwards writes the potential sequel
The project is in good hands with Becky Hartman-Edwards, known for her work on popular series like “Firefly Lane” and “Parenthood,” who has been tapped to write and executive produce. Warner Bros. Television, the studio behind the original “One Tree Hill,” will also be involved in the production.
Fans will be thrilled to know that Bush and Burton are expected to reprise their iconic roles as Brooke Davis and Peyton Sawyer, while Ackles is also in discussions to return as the fiery Rachel Gatina. However, there’s still no official confirmation on whether other beloved cast members—such as Chad Michael Murray, who played Lucas Scott, or Bethany Joy Lenz, known for her role as Haley James Scott—will join the sequel.
The original “One Tree Hill” aired for nine unforgettable seasons, first on The WB and later on The CW, becoming a cultural phenomenon.
Set in the fictional town of Tree Hill, North Carolina, the series began with the intense rivalry between half-brothers Lucas (Chad Michael Murray) and Nathan Scott (James Lafferty). Their shared love of basketball gradually brought them closer, weaving a complex narrative of friendship, love, and family drama that captivated viewers. Over the years, the show delved deep into the lives of its characters, exploring themes of ambition, betrayal, and the ups and downs of growing up.
Sophia Bush’s portrayal of the ambitious and fashion-forward Brooke Davis became a fan favorite, while Hilarie Burton’s Peyton Sawyer, the brooding artist with a deep love for music, struck a chord with many. Daneel Ackles’ character, Rachel Gatina, added a layer of complexity and intrigue, particularly in later seasons.
The show’s impact didn’t end when the cameras stopped rolling; Bush, Burton, and Lenz extended their connection to the series by co-hosting the “One Tree Hill” rewatch podcast “Drama Queens.” While Burton stepped away from the podcast after Season 6, due to her character’s departure from the show, the podcast has continued to be a hit among fans, with Robert Buckley, who joined the series in Season 7, stepping in as the third host.
The new sequel will not see the return of the original series creator, Mark Schwahn.
Schwahn was publicly accused of assault and harassment by Burton and several other cast and crew members, which led to his exclusion from the project. The group has been vocal about their experiences, sharing their stories on the “Drama Queens” podcast and bringing attention to the importance of a safe and respectful working environment in Hollywood.
As the “One Tree Hill” sequel continues to develop, fans are eagerly awaiting more details on what’s in store for their favorite characters. Will Tree Hill’s next chapter bring back more familiar faces? How will the new series honor the legacy of the original while carving out its own unique path?
